But I'M not ready
I think Charlie's ready for potty training. I know. Eighteen months is WAY TOO EARLY for boys. But there's this window and he's opening the window, even though all the manuals say it should be closed and if I ignore the open window we're all going to get cold and then it will be too late and he'll get stubborn and I've taken this metaphor too far.
A-hem. I'm a little freaked. Can you tell?
So he's been saying "Bye-bye pee!" every time one of us uses the toilet for a while. He tells me when he needs his diaper changed. He's been waking up in the middle of the night whimpering and writhing around and not settling until after about 10 minutes of struggling with me he holds really still and pees the pee of the desperate. Then he's so happy and so relieved and wants me to change his diaper right then so he can go back to sleep already. Don't you know I'm tired mother?
Then there's this.
He's been pushing the step stool over to the toilet and opening it up and standing there shouting "Pee! Pooooop-pee!" So I took his diaper off and let him try. And then I decided it was cute (after nothing happened for a few minutes), so I went to get the camera. He peed while I was gone. Most of it landed around the toilet rather than into it, but if I'd stayed by his side like a conscientious mother he would have made it.
I'm so not ready.
Well, but if he's ready?? He's probably on the fast side of the average curve. Consider the alternative -- if you don't take this window that's being offered it might take a looooong time.
Cute picture!!

Charlie's such a quick study and I'm sure he has been watching big brother in EVERYTHING he does. If he is ready to try--go for it! You'll know if it isn't the right timing once you get going. Good luck Charlie!

Ya know.... Ben finished toilet training at 22 mos. Silas, 20 mos. Hazel, 18 mos. I know it doesn't help how ready YOU are or not ;) but I thought I'd put that out there. Sometimes the conventional wisdom doesn't fit the kid or the situation. Still, it does mean spending a lot more time in public bathrooms for a while!

Ok people. The tone I was going for with this was slightly annoyed in an amused and befuddled sort of say. Of course I'm going to follow his cues and start trying a few potty training techniques. Just because it happened before I expected it to, doesn't mean I'm going to ignore it.

Oh well, my tone was meant for reassuring and encouraging for something I could tell you were gearing up to do . I think I need a more emphatic winkey-smile face. And I do truly personally hate the phase of going back to the grocery store toilet three times in one trip and am glad when we can get to just going once before leaving home and once before leaving the store. Two of my kids have small bladders :).
