Forgive my lack of posting yesterday. It as the first day of Tommy's fall term of pre-school. After a full month of no school, I was happy to have a bit of time to myself during Charlie's nap. I decided not to spend that time on the computer. Of course, after about 20 minutes I got bored so I cleaned the bathrooms. How very disappointing.
Tommy was VERY happy to get back to school. Life with Mommy is boring. The only hiccup was when a teacher confiscated the banana bread & butter sandwich I'd put in his lunch. She thought there were nuts in it. There were no nuts. Tommy told her there were no nuts, but she didn't believe him. It was 1/3 of his lunch, so he was pretty hungry by the time I picked him up. I sent a strongly worded e-mail to the school asking that they please call and ask me if there's ever a question on something in his lunch. Just call me Over-Reaction-Mother! It may look like his lunch is 4 times larger than your average preschooler's, but he usually eats all of it. Other than that, the day went really well. He was happy to see his old friends and told me the best part of the day was "meeting all my new classmates and helping them not be scared of school." The little sweetie.
Strangely, I was actually pretty lonely without him. Charlie's not exactly an engaging conversationalist yet. He's making strides in that direction though! Charlie told his very first joke yesterday. I didn't realize 18 month olds could have an original sense of humor. There's a lot of back story, so stay with me.
On the way to school Charlie was holding his cow and saying "moo!" Tommy started saying "baa!" and laughing. Charlie got the joke. He'd pick up an animal and say the wrong sound and then laugh. But that's not HIS joke! There's more.
When we picked Tommy up in the afternoon, Tommy was saying his name over and over to Charlie. I can't remember exactly why. He was probably trying (again) to get Charlie to say Tommy correctly. Charlie was trying, but his efforts weren't satisfying his brother. Then he grinned and said "daddy" and laughed like it was the funniest thing ever. Tommy and I immediately figured out that he was doing a new version of the animal sounds joke and laughed too. The whole rest of the way home Tommy or I would say a name and Charlie would say a different name and we'd all laugh.
I guess you had to be there.
OK, I get there are kids allergic to nuts, but to steal a good chunk of poor Tommy's lunch is downright wrong! Allergic-type kids should know not to share lunches and if they are sensitive enough to react to air born allergens, it seems like it was moot at this point. Besides, how difficult is it to squish around a bit on banana bread and figure out the 4.5 year old knows what he is talking about. I'm outraged and you are not over reacting.

That's sad about his lunch. :-( Our preschool has the same no-peanuts policy, even though the only kid allergic to anything is Quartz and his isn't to peanuts and isn't that bad. It's hard to think of good non-PBJ lunches sometimes! Thanks for the banana bread idea. :-)
