Fruits and Vegetables for the Week.
David is intrigued by the book Hungry Planet: What the World Eats. It's a collection of photos showing what foods different families around the world consume in one week. David finds it quite interesting, although he's only ever looked at the book in the bookstore.
Here's a mini-version of the same concept for our family. This is a picture of one week's worth of fresh produce. It's just the fresh fruits and vegetables I bought for this week. It seemed to complicated to put the meat, grains, snacks, frozen stuff etc. out there too. The fruits and vegetables in the picture cost $46.14. That's about average for a weekly grocery trip for us. I don't know if that's a lot compared to other families, but Tommy and David will inhale vast amounts of any fruits and vegetables made available to them. I have to explicitly mark the things I want to cook for meals or they'll get eaten. We tend to run out of fruits and vegetable before seven days pass, but then we just make do with other foods from the freezer and cupboards until grocery day. We are also likely to cook frozen vegetables once or twice a week, which aren't pictured.
I'm kind of scared to find out how much we're going to spend on fruits and vegetables when Charlie starts eating like a big kid.
What's in the picture?
4 mangoes
4 tomatoes
6 peppers
2 sweet potatoes
1 avocado
8 oz mushrooms
1 bag salad
3 lb bag of apples
2 lb bag of oranges
1 lb bag of carrots
1 mini-watermelon (a treat for Tommy's birthday)
2 pints blueberries (on sale!)
1 head cauliflower
1.5 lbs broccoli
6 bananas
1 bag grapes
1 bunch green onions
1 head bok choy
2 English cucumbers

I'm so proud of that healthy pile of fruits and veggies! That's a grand way to raise super hero boys.

My brother bought me that book for Christmas! I devoured every page of it within 24 hours - it was totally interesting to me.
I'm definitely impressed by your vegetable consumption. I think Alex eats about 1/4 cup of frozen peas every night. That plus a daily banana and a daily can of mandarin oranges is the sum total of his fruit/veggie intake (at least in the winter, during summer, I buy whatever is fresh and local). Genoa barely eats any veggies at all. Not that Dave and I are much better!

We love that book too! And I'm very impressed with your use of produce. We eat a LOT of it here, but I don't think we are quite as healthy as you guys. Good for all of you.
